Mexican Grand Prix, FP2: Sainz finished on top
2024-10-26The Mexican Grand Prix continued with a special stage, where the field was able to test Pirelli's 2025 compounds in the second phase. We couldn't avoid the red flag this time either, as George Russell crashed the Mercedes.
Just as the free practice session began, Russell lost control of his car at a corner exit and suffered a nasty crash. At that moment, we had no idea that this would be the "most exciting" moment of the practice, nor that we would later have to worry about Russell's health, who was in pain from his ribs for the rest of the session. That was indeed the case, while the Pirelli tire test proceeded in a monotonous, boring, and quiet manner, with drivers using unmarked tires. So we couldn't really tell who was using which compound, and we could only make assumptions based on the lap times. By the end of the session, a few medium tires appeared here and there, but only those who did not participate in FP1 could use them, which did not change the overall picture. Carlos Sainz ultimately won FP2 ahead of Oscar Piastri and Yuki Tsunoda, but we did not gain any insights into the competitive balance today.
