Chandhok: "It would be amazing if Alonso could pull off the third one close to 50!"
2025-02-02
Many dismissively wave their hands when Fernando Alonso's name comes up. Karun Chandhok, the former F1 driver, is not among them, as he believes that with Adrian Newey's arrival, Alonso could easily become a world champion at the age of 45.
Chandhok thinks the situation now is very similar to when Newey joined the midfield team Red Bull Racing. Back then, Formula 1 was also facing significant rule changes, and the same is true now. Chandhok concludes that, similar to RB, Aston Martin could also be incredibly strong:
"In 2007 and 2008, they were mainly preparing to build their structure and for the major changes in 2009, and although Brawn surprised them with the double diffuser, by the second half of that season, they were already the best. The rest we all know: from 2010 to 2013, they swept every world championship title, dominating the racing circus for four years. I think something similar is happening at Aston Martin now, and if they can do a sufficiently successful job by 2025, they could achieve explosive development in the new regulatory framework in 2026.
It would be an incredible story if Fernando won his third world championship at the age of 44-45 with a car designed by Adrian Newey. He surely believes in this too, which is why he is still in the race!" - reflected the Indian expert.
